RALEIGH—The Veterans Restoration Quarters (VRQ), sponsored by Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministries, Inc., has received funding from the NC Housing Finance Agency to provide housing for North Carolina veterans who are experiencing homelessness or imminently at risk of experiencing homelessness. This funding will help finance substantial renovations to 121 double-occupancy rooms on the VRQ campus, which was rendered uninhabitable by Hurricane Helene in late 2024.
This funding is awarded through the Agency’s Supportive Housing Development Program (SHDP), and is supported by the North Carolina Housing Trust Fund. SHDP finances emergency, transitional and permanent housing services for North Carolina residents who are below 50% of the area median income, including people experiencing homelessness, children and youth who are in or aging out of foster care, people with disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and more.
“The NC Housing Trust Fund is a crucial resource for supporting North Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Scott Farmer, the Agency’s executive director. “Investing in safe, affordable housing for our veterans is one of the most important commitments we can make.”
In all, a total of $10 million in funding was appropriated by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide housing for North Carolina veterans.
